A forgotten warrior, permanently down for the count. A sports prodigy. A private eye demanding justice...
When a former golden gloves fighter is discovered dead from an apparent overdose, his grieving wife doesn't buy it. Soon, old friend Liam Quinn is in the picture.
He's tracking the clues back to a local soccer team, where a kid with silky skills is turning heads. His old friend worked there part time; did he really fall prey to the demon heroin... or did he discover something so shocking, it proved fatal?
'A very good second book and will look forward to reading the third'
-- Mac Blair
An agent wants the kid's signature on a pro deal; a smuggler wants Quinn to disappear; and a mob hitman is chasing him all over Philadelphia. Then there's the question of Quinn's first love, Nora; not to mention his efforts to make peace with his family.
If he manages to handle all of that, Philly's most famous mafioso wants a word...
A hardboiled tale in the mystery, thriller and suspense genre, Quinn Gets His Kicks is the second of twelve books featuring the wisecracking ex-con detective.
Q & A with.... LH THOMSON!
AND WHO IS LIAM QUINN?
Quinn is the third son of Allan and Maureen Quinn. Al is a retired cop who has lived with his wife in a Fishtown rowhouse since the late seventies. As a kid, Liam was a boxing prodigy touted to eventually become an Olympian and pro. But he let the pressure from his friends and family -- and his own high expectations -- get to him and had a breakdown. He gave up the sport and turned to painting. Eventually, due to the trickery of a veteran con-man, he found himself forging Japanese masters.
SO, WHAT ARE THE BOOKS LIKE?
If you enjoy humorous mysteries, detectives who are a little tongue-in-check and dry, you'll enjoy Quinn. I grew up reading John D. Macdonald, Gregory MacDonald's Fletch novels, and Robert B. Parker's Spenser series, and a lot of that shows up in Quinn... with a little Jim Rockford as well, I guess. (But I won't cop to Dan Tanner in Vegas. That's a cheese line too far).
WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT QUINN?
Mainly that he has no idea he's special.
IS EVERY BOOK ABOUT ART AND PHILADELPHIA?
Nope, he gets up to all sorts of trouble, in all sorts of places -- Florida, Arizona, California and Minnesota, to name a few. Almost sounds like a Beach Boys song. Almost.
DO I HAVE TO COUGH UP FULL FARE FOR EACH?
Nah! The first three are cheap to try and hook you, like the slave to good reading that you are! Dance, happy reader puppet, dance! Or... ahem... perhaps not. My apologies for that outburst. Anyway, if you want to save a bundle just get an Unlimited subscription and read the whole lot for zippo.
DO YOU WRITE ANYTHING ELSE?
ERRMMM... not as LH Thomson. But if you wanted to check out what a somewhat different style that might, nonetheless, seem strangely familiar, you should check out some action thrillers by Sam Powers. Hell of a guy, that Sam.
In the meantime, if you enjoy mystery thrillers from authors such as LT Ryan, Rob Sinclair and Wayne Stinnett, you'll enjoy Quinn.
You'll usually find my mysteries in categories including heist fiction, organized crime stories; hardboiled mysteries; private detective fiction; prime free; crime thrillers and suspense; traditional detectives; and private investigator novels.

Not Kindle Unlimited, and not in Grammar school either, for those who decided to be grammar nazis. When I am physically reading a book, if can understand what it all means, then ignore the rest; if listening {most of the time} same thing goes, and do not take off stars if it's through audible mess of a program. The story is the point, as in was it well told, etcetera, and everything else is a personal opinion that others should not bother with nor take in to account, because everybody has their usual genres they read, but the point is regardless of that was the aforementioned items good or not so good or bad. Quinn Gets His Kicks A private detective series Liam Quinn Mysteries Book 2 edition by LH Thomson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have been looking forward to another Liam Quinn novel and I wasn't disappointed in this one. The character of Quinn is likable and his family politics always interesting. This time the story is dark and I found the soccer world not terribly interesting although Thomson wraps the mystery up very neatly - no spoilers! - and I didn't pick the murderer, which is unusual for me.
A fast-paced thriller which can only lead to even better things!
Wanders thru an endless parade of characters. Much more of an ethnograph than a mystery. Hero gets an important lead early for no apparent reason, perhaps author had no better idea. Weak characters talking like tough guys. First book much better.
I really enjoy the Liam Quinn stories. Good plot, believable characters with real problems. Quinn starts out trying to help an old neighborhood friend and gets shot at,blown up and almost killed. Great detail and family dynamics, with a bit of religion thrown in the mix.
I liked this second one better than the first one. There was more action and more different things going on. Quinn, as usual, gets involved with Vin the Shin, a mobster. Who helps him get out of trouble many times. His family does not like it that he even knows Vin. Lots of good characters, a surprise help to keep Quinn from getting killed. All kinds of different things. I wish he an Nora would get together. He is such a dummy along that line.
A very good second book and will look forward to reading the third one.
I relate more to Quinn partially because he's into European football, or those in US call soccer. I'm a fan of football myself and I can understand his liking to it. And this book told a story around football. Not really in glamorous football world, but the feeder club. There are some reference to big football league in Europe, but just as background story.
I fell in love more with Liam, as he's so human. He's naturally had an inquiring mind (some will call it nosy), which made him saw things that others might missed. He's a real detective. I devour this book in one day straight, and my late night was so worth it.
Off I go to the next one...
You root for the good guy, wanting him to wrap things up, but not too quickly because you don't want the story to end too soon. And you smile when he draws it all together in the end, a self-satisfied smirk on your face, wondering how he did after all. And that despite the little clues he gives along the way.
Liam Quinn, a man with a chequered past, all round good guy doing what he believes is right after some mistakes he made in an earlier time of his life. Intelligent, savvy and watched over by a fairy godfather. The mob is there too, after all this is Philly! And they are both the good and the bad guys.
Family life, sound values, romance (of a sort), all neatly packaged in a novel of simple yet profound truths. It's well paced, no loose ends, and the characters are well rounded. Touches of humour, but never distracting from the real storyline. You can't wait to turn the page to see what comes next. All in all, a worthy read, entertaining yet with a perfect amount of tension.
Thumbs up, and thank you for an excellent read.
...just as the boxer wound up for another devastating body shot." Liked the protagonist and realistic bouts involving physical contact. Dialogue was spot on being both humorous and colorful at times whether mixing it up with suspects or family members. Couple of my favorite passages being, ' "You're working with your brother? Your mother'll be pleased, seeing as how you don't come around so much no more." Again one Sunday dinner missed, in a year. One. ' and "Chow down kid. You never know when it might be your last." Toss in some murders, the Mob, some intrigue and well-developed characters, that said this will not be the last Liam Quinn book I read. Very good crime story and I did enjoy!
